Amazon To Replace Copies Of Deleted Orwell Book

If you are one of the many who had a copy of one of the problem Orwell books that was mysteriously deleted from your Kindle you have already received an email from Amazon with a replacement offer. Amazon said in an e-mail message to those customers that they could chose to have their digital copies restored and they would be able to see the annotations they had previously made. If you do not want your book restored, you may be eligible for an Amazon gift certificate or a check for $30. Since many of you have probably already read the book, the $30 gift check is probably looking like a nice apology for the whole mess.

It's pretty crazy when you think about it.  If you went to Barnes and Noble and bought a book you really would not expect someone to come in your house the middle of the night and try to take it back.  Well I am glad that Amazon has trying to make up for the whole situation.

Get A Kindle Light And Case Together in One

The $49.95 Periscope Lighted Folio is a combination Kindle case and reading light rolled into one. I have not found a lot of reviews on this item, but it seems pretty interesting. Here is the information from the Periscope webpage:

"Periscope® offers a single compact Kindle cover that also features a built-in retractable reading light, as well as notepad and pen holders. Ideal for reading at home or on the road, simply slip your Kindle into the custom designed holder, pull up the retractable, twin LED reading light, and begin reading in any low light environment — in bed, on a bus, train, or airplane, as well as in a car or conference room.

The Lighted Folio's built-in 5” x 8” notepad and pen holders makes it ideal for students and business users. The Periscope light is powered by three "AA" batteries (not included) that last at least 40 hours.

The Folio's left side cover can be folded over so the note pad is positioned behind the Kindle and locked in place with the magnetic cover snap to facilitate one-handed use."

The case is made of a synthetic leather. The case is available for the Kindle 1 and the Kindle 2. The case is available from eBags.

Kindle DX to Ship in 2 to 3 Days

For those of you waiting for the Kindle DX to ship your wait may soon be over. I was checking the Kindle DX page this morning and it said the DX was going to ship in 2 to 3 days.

For those of you not familiar with the DX, the Kindle DX is Amazon's newest ebook reader that has a much larger screen that the original 6" Kindle. The new DX also has added PDF support which is at this time still missing from the 6" Kindle. The DX was built to be a better reader to support textbooks. Several colleges have set up pilot programs to see if they can save money by reducing paper. The plan is to send all student handouts directly to their Kindles.

For more information on the Kindle DX, click here to go to the page on Amazon.

The New Kindle DX and Textbooks

There was a really interesting article by Robert Spar at thebottomline.org about text books and the Kindle DX.

According to the article in 2005 students paid an estimated $900 for text books. The article also states "Three textbook publishers that collectively publish 60% of the country's textbooks recently agreed to publish Kindle versions of their books. At least six universities will be running Kindle pilot programs, wherein a number of students will be provided with the devices to see how students react to the devices."

It has been pretty clear that Amazon has launched the Kindle DX to scoop up the textbook market and has done so early enough to beat out the competition from other larger sized ebook readers that are due to be released later this year. Princeton University, which received a grant to purchase the Kindle DX for students, is one of the half-dozen schools participating in a pilot project with Amazon . The other schools running DX pilot programs are Arizona State, Case Western Reserve, Reed College, and University of Virginia Darden School of Business and Pace University.

Many schools are looking at this as a possible cost savings by reducing the amount of paper used by students. Documents that are normally printed, copied, and handed out to students can be delivered in an electronic format instead of printed. Princeton had estimated that it spent $5 million on paper last year.
